Introducing Carina Adams…

There are some amazing writers out there. I have yet to get a taste of each one. As I find ones I enjoy I want to share them with you.

Let me introduce to you the lovely Carina Adams. I had the pleasure of meeting her at the 2016 RT Booklovers Convention here in Las Vegas. I thought it would be fun to interview Carina so we could all get a little glimpse into her mind.

AJ: Thank you, Carina, for taking a moment from your busy life to do this!
Carina: I am beyond honored that you asked me!
AJ: Okay let’s get started so we can get back to feeding these greedy book loving readers. 😉 What are 5 songs you are listening to right now?

Carina: 5 Songs I am currently hooked on – I listen to music while I write to get emotionally invested in a scene, so some of the songs I listen to, I listen to on repeat – all day. lol
1) i hate u, i love u – gnash and Olivia O’Brien
2) Unsteady – X Ambassadors
3) Make You Miss Me – Sam Hunt
4) I’ll Be The Moon and It’s Different For Girls – Dierks Bentley (I know it’s two, but I can’t pick between them)
5) Forever Country – Artists of Then, Now and Forever

AJ: Tell me a little about your current project.

Carina: My current project is a prequel to Forever Red. It’s a student/teacher romance that gives the background to Lia and why she behaves the way she does. Everyone was worried when I first started writing it, because Lia is the main character in Red and belongs with Nate (also from Red). Yet, we needed to know what happened. I love this book. It’s sweet and heartwarming, and about two characters who love each other even though they shouldn’t.

AJ: The year is almost over. What do you want to get done or do before 2017 is here?

Carina: I can’t believe 2016 is almost over! I want to finish Blurry, the Forever Red Prequel, and get a good start on my next book. Keep your fingers crossed.

AJ: Every writer is first and foremost a reader. What are some of your favorite books?

Carina: Every writer is a reader first! 🙂 My favorite book, a story I reread every year, is Outlander. I cannot explain how much I love that book. For 2016, though, Paper Princess has got to be my all time favorite. It is a MUST read series. Watch Me, by Ada Frost is a fantastic read as well. And, if you like taboo, Balance, by Lucia Franco, is something you cannot miss.

AJ: Who is your favorite book boyfriend out of your babies?

Carina: My favorite book boyfriend, out of all of my babies, has to be Noah. He’s a secondary character in Forever Red, but will have his own book as soon as he starts to talk to me. I love him. He makes me laugh and breaks my heart all at once.

AJ: Who is your all time book boyfriend?

Carina: James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser will always be my ultimate book boyfriend. If I could go through the standing stones and meet Jamie, and know that he was going to fall in love with me, I would do it. Well, at least, I would have before I had kids.

AJ: What TV show are you hooked on?

Carina: I don’t watch much TV. Right now, I’m loving This Is Us. However, I’m a HUGE fan of The 100. I cannot wait for it to come back.

AJ: You have a husband and kids. How do you juggle the writing into your day? I know I struggle to get work done some days with my girls.

Carina: Juggling writing with everything else is hard. There are days where I kill it as a writer and other days where I kill it as a mom. I’m quite sure I have never had a day where I have succeeded at both. It is a balancing act. The days I write I need to focus and work. But, the days with my boys need to be their day where I give them all of my attention. I’m still working on figuring it all out.

AJ: What was your favorite book as a kid? Do your boys have a favorite series?

Carina: My favorite book as a child was Mother, Mother, I Want Another. I’m not sure why. I just loved it. When I got older, it was Anne of Green Gables. My boys both love to read, no matter what it is. The littlest loves the Bernstein Bears, but right now we’re reading a collection of Maine stories he has. His favorite is Antlers Forever! about a little moose. It’s cute. My oldest always has a book in his hand. He’s reading the Imaginary Veterinarian series to his brother right now.

***

Full disclosure… I have read, FOREVER RED, OUT OF THE BLUE, LAY IT DOWN, and ALMOST INNOCENT. I loved them all! HOT FOR TEACHER and A SECRET AFFAIR are now available for $0.99. I plan to hit those up soon as well.

Thanks again, Carina for stopping by!

October…

Hey guys! I love October… No really I do! It’s the beginning of the season for me. Halloween then Thanksgiving, Christmas, and finally New Years.

My decorations are mostly up. I have a few more decorations to add this year. I wish my house was set up a bit differently so I could have the strobe light going with the bloody hand prints and all. I have kids but trust me, even they know the decorations are Mami’s thing.

Since I love this time of the year so much, my first newsletter will release this month. Stay tuned and if you haven’t already signed-up I suggest you do. I have a treat going to one of my newsletter readers. Click HERE to sign-up.

Last week had some bumps in the road that felt like craters but I am breathing better. Stress has a way of suffocating us all. I hope you have someone to lean on or talk to because I have no idea how I would get through the hard moments without my amazing circle. My hubby is most definitely on the forefront. Seriously, I couldn’t get through it all without him.

So tell me, who loves October? Halloween? What’s your costume this year?

Congratulations to the Winner!

Hey guys!

So I ran an #AmazonGiveaway for a copy of Widower’s Aura I want to congratulate the winner:

Stephanie C.

One copy went unclaimed so I’ll be considering a fun way to give that away to one lucky reader.

I have a couple things coming up. If you haven’t heard, I’ll be doing a book signing on:

October 23rd from 2 to 5 p.m. in Las Vegas at BooksOrBooks

I hope to see you there if you are in town! I’m super nervous and excited about this.

I’ll be sending out my FIRST newsletter sometime in the coming weeks. If you’ve already signed up, keep an eye on your email. If you haven’t signed up, get to it! 😉 I do not plan to do these often so don’t worry about me annoying you.

I’m in the middle of editing Always Mine, Lindsey and Marc’s story. The first round of heavy duty edits are coming to an end and then I get to do this a few more times. This way it’s as polished as it can be for the editor and then guess what? More editing! HA!

I need to get back to writing book 3 of the St. Fleur Series, Jaime Lynn and Jesse’s story. I left off about halfway through it. Some editing after that and then I hope to get to a non-St. Fleur project I started a little bit ago.

I hope everyone is doing well! If you have any questions or comments leave me a comment below or one of the other routes on my Contact Me page.

Happy reading!

M.I.A.

Hi friends!

I’m sorry I haven’t been around much lately. I’ve had a ton of things land on my plate and I’m beginning to crumble.

My oldest got back to school, I’m editing book 2, we volunteered to foster a dog, I was volun-told to head up the block party for my neighborhood, my kids are sick, and my family car broke down. Those are the highlights in no particular order.

So mix that all up and you get one stressed out mom/wife/author who ends up going to the ER for chest pains.

Good news: My heart and body are good, great even!

Bad news: I suck at managing my stress and was having an anxiety attack. -_-

Time to prioritize things and learn how to cope with my new life.

So bear with me as I reboot AJ 2.0.

Quick news:

Widower’s Aura has received some pretty great reviews so far. If you liked Sofia and Noah’s story, please tell a friend (or two.)

There is a Facebook group, St. Fleur Belles, if you want to join it and get a chance to talk about the town of St. Fleur, romance, your love of books, and/or make new friends.

Well back to editing! I’m really excited for you to read Lindsey and Marc’s story in book 2.

Have a great day and happy reading!

xoxo

Confessions of a Bibliophile Interview

I did my FIRST interview with Caedy at Confessions of a Bibliophile. Head over to her blog and see which of her ten questions really made me think!

On her blog you can also find where I answer or at least attempt to compile a Top Ten list of my favorite books. An incredibly hard task, you’ll get to see which author got me into romance from how many of her books I chose.Ha!

Caedy also posted her 4 Star review of Widower’s Aura.

“This book is so very well written and it takes a trope that is quite difficult to get right and gets it so very, very write.  A.J. Renee’s debut novel is filled with a little bit of mystery to add to the romance that is building between Noah and Sofia.  Everything flows so naturally through out the story, and even those scenes that are of an explicit sexual nature are so very well written.” -Read the rest of her review here.

Please show this blogger some love for her participation in my Blog Tour!

Thank you again, Confessions of a Bibliophile, for taking time out to interview me and read Widower’s Aura. I’m really excited you enjoyed Sofia and Noah’s story!

xo,

AJ

Busy, Busy, Busy…

I know it’s been a bit since I posted. My girls finished up their dance season, we had company, went to San Francisco… BUSY!

An update.

Tomorrow Widower’s Aura will be sent to the editor. I want you to have the best experience reading my novels and that includes not having to fumble through grammar issues, etc… Teasers are being worked on but let me tell you picking lines that will leave you guys wanting more sounds easier than it really is. I have one created and I want one more at least.

I’m narrowing down my choice on Always Mine’s book cover. I will also be releasing the synopsis in the coming month or so. This novel features Lindsey and Marc’s story.

Book 3, Jaime Lynn and Jesse’s story, is currently in the works. Follow me on Facebook and Twitter to hear about my progress. I’m at 49% complete and I’m really happy with how it’s coming out. This one won’t have any suspense like Widower’s Aura and Always Mine but the conflict hits some tough, real life experiences and issues. It’s been quite the ride.

I can’t believe July is around the corner! My Pre-Release Blitz is July 19! That’s right around the corner!

I’m also a little under the weather. Here’s hoping I feel better fast! I just read Laura Kaye’s Hard to Let Go this week which was a great read and nice break.

So please bear with me during all this craziness. Feel free to chat me up on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. I’d love to hear from you! Don’t forget to follow me and make sure you have your pre-order set for Widower’s Aura, links can be found HERE.

Talk to you soon!

❤ AJ

Happy Father’s Day!

I’m a day late, I know. I was running around yesterday trying to make my girl’s daddy, and my happily ever after, have a special day.

Here I am now! Happy Father’s Day! To all the men who have done right by their kids, the ones who have stepped in and loved them regardless of the DNA factor and to all the women juggling both roles. I truly hope you had a great day!

I think a lot of men get nagged quite a bit for a variety of reasons. No one is perfect, I’m surely far from being perfect. I got one thing right, my man. Sure he’s not perfect, there are moments he can frustrate me but the man has the fatherhood thing DOWN. I think he’s the better parent. He thinks I’m too hard on myself but truly, he’s great with our three girls. He’s very hands on and pitches in with everything. Thank you to my love for every little and big thing he does.

There are plenty of examples of all the wrong things a man can be or do when it comes to being a father. Look to your baby daddy and recognize him for his hard work. We are quick to criticize and they need to know they haven’t screwed it all up either. None of us are perfect and it takes a village to raise our babies.

If the person sharing your child’s other half of their DNA has refused to step up or even recognize your child… well that’s on THEM. Make sure those kids know there is nothing wrong with them. If their families step up and love that child let them. Not all men who do this awful thing were raised to be that way. It’s shocking and heartbreaking to the families to see. Your kids are loved and they will know their value. Your love will be their strength and if it’s right for your family one day a man will steal your heart and love those babies like he was the one to create them.

CHEERS to all those Daddy’s and Mommy’s doing it right! Love your baby’s, teach them right from wrong and raise them to be strong and compassionate members of society. We need more loving, kind, respectful, intelligent, and overall good human’s in our society.

Keep up the good work!

Love

Orlando is “Home” to me. Waking up and seeing it all over the news in Las Vegas was jarring. Not as jarring as the reports that poured in.

Those who know me well know I’m what my family loves to label, “overly emotional.” I used to see this as a negative thing. It’s not. I feel. I have a lot of ‘feelers.’ It doesn’t matter that I don’t love you or even know you but I will shed tears for you and I’ll pray for you and if I can, I’ll even help you. Days after the horrific tragedy at Pulse Nightclub happened and I still can’t wrap my mind around it.

My own emotions are nothing compared to the pain and despair the family and friends of those killed, injured and the survivors themselves are experiencing. I just can’t… the thought alone brings tears to my eyes. My stomach is cramping and the urge to be sick is becoming almost too much. My own pain and emotions don’t matter right now. If you’ve ever lost a loved one, you know the pain the families and friends are experiencing will never truly leave. May they find peace, in time, with their newly promoted angels.

Coming together and unitying as a community is the only thing that will heal The City Beautiful. Seeing images of hundreds of people donating blood, food, supplies and their time is beautiful. It brings me peace and hope seeing their love and compassion pouring through their actions. It also makes me proud to call Orlando home.

A million thank you’s and kudos to the Police, EMT’s, Doctors, Nurses, and volunteers that worked their butts off to ensure the smallest loss of life. May they find peace with their actions and decisions.

Lastly, good-bye, for now, to the souls who have passed. May you always know the impact you left on the ones you loved and who loved you. Gone but never forgotten.

❤ Be kind, even when it’s the hardest. Love, because the alternative is just not an option. ❤

A little about me…

I’m a mother of three, born and raised in the United States and I’m Puerto Rican. I was raised to be proud of my Puerto Rican heritage. I speak the language and will honestly admit that I’m failing my kids in passing on the language. If any of you have taken spanish in school you KNOW it’s not the easiest. My peers and I got in plenty of trouble for, “but it sounds right!”

Anyways, I digress. Today’s post was inspired by a Huffington Post article that claimed only 43% of those they polled knew that Puerto Rican’s are citizens. (If you want to learn a bit more on the history of our citizenship click HERE to learn more from the History Channel.)This is very upsetting to me. Sure I grew up knowing this. To me this is just a reminder of how lacking our education system is. I don’t know about you but short of the Mexican War and Spanish American War we were not taught a lot about Latinos and their impact or relationship within America’s history.

At the bottom of this article there was a side article for click bait. Yup they got me. It was images and quotes of various Hispanic actors in Hollywood. They were speaking out on the lack of casting and how growing up they didn’t see people like them on T.V. It’s true, it really is. We see more now at least. One goes on to say that only gang banger parts were offered, another says crack-ho parts, and another says they asked for them to use their accents. Oh, and the movie Argo? The part Ben Affleck portrays (I’ve never seen it) is a Mexican American man. (This can go two folds, one Ben was the best actor to come along and snag the part, or two shame on casting for not picking one of the many strong Hispanic actors to do the part. You can’t be upset you’re type-casted for how you look and then be upset they didn’t pick you but rather a different race for the part you look more the part of.)

This all saddened me because I can see what they are saying. Personally, I’m an advocate for humanity. I don’t care what you look like, where you come from, what language you speak, or who you have fallen in love with. I really don’t. I may be curious and ask because I’m fascinated about our differences and learning more about real people, not just text book or what stereotypes have told us to believe.

This then had me thinking about my characters. Sofia has exotic high cheek bones but her family line has been from New Orleans for quite some time and with her grandmother’s last name, Blanc, you know there is French ancestry. Noah is an all American man, born and raised and his background like so many people is very blended. Lindsey comes from an Italian American household with light skin and brown eyes. Marc is Puerto Rican, tan with whiskey colored eyes. Jaime Lynn is another American blend. Jesse is described to have milk chocolate skin with brown eyes.

Their careers in order, Juvenile Probation Officer turned photographer, prior Air Force Security Forces airman turned handyman, Librarian, prior Air Force airman turned Construction company owner/worker, Pub owner, and Bartender/Co-owner of a Bar/Brewery.

With all of the above I’ll share, Sofia’s exotic cheek bones and her career as a JPO was inspired by my lovely, beautiful best friend who is now one of my angels. My husband is in the Air Force and brews at home as a hobby. I have a Masters in Criminal Justice and I used to work in a library. I have family in New Orleans and love the city and the people. Quite a few of my friends come from first if not second generation Italian families. I had a few uncles who worked in construction so Marc’s occupation is a nod at them. And Jesse was originally a white southern man. That is until a friend of mine complained he was having a hard time finding a good woman to date. He’s a smart, funny, good looking black man and I thought this really sucked. So Jesse is my way of giving him a love story, even if he has NO CLUE that he inspired pieces of Jesse. I’m also glad I changed Jesse because there really are not enough interracial romance novels. The shortage of stock photos reinforces this fact.

After analyzing my characters I’m happy to see how so many facets of my own beliefs, experiences and the people I love and admire have brought my characters together. I don’t care what you look like or who you fall in love with. I do care about whether or not you are a kind, respectful and loving person. If you treat me and my family as such I like to think I’m a loyal person. If you don’t… well, how about we don’t share too much today?!

Well if you’ve stuck around this far know I’m super excited to share Noah and Sofia with you! You can pre-order now before I raise the price. The links are found HERE.

If you have any questions or thoughts go ahead and comment below. I like to think I’m an open book and sometimes I don’t know what you want to know about me. I’d love to hear from you!

Reviews Removed

You excitedly finish a novel and can’t wait to sing its praises (or the desire to warn others to avoid it, save their money and even suggest a different author to read.) You decide this one is worth your time to review. Now you’ve put together what you deem is a wonderful review, summarizing the novel, the pro’s and con’s and any constructive criticism so others will know your opinion. You submit it to Amazon and move on with your life. Or so you think.

There have been numerous complaints of Amazon rejecting reviews. Receiving a message similar to this: “We removed your Customer Reviews because you know the author personally.”

Okay on the one hand, I understand and respect Amazon for making sure items, in this example-books, are not being bloated with 5 star reviews by well meaning family and friends. On the other hand, if the individual has submitted a well thought out review I think it’s unfair of Amazon to remove it.

Why can’t a family or friend be a genuine fan? I won’t even get into the how Amazon has linked the two. Talk about big brother conspiracy like theories. Incredibly creepy.

As I get closer to Widower’s Aura becoming live I worry about losing well thought reviews to Amazon’s scrutinization of my relationship with my first readers. Reviews are necessary in the writing community especially for Independent Authors like myself.

Personally, I don’t care for any dishonest reviews. I understand and accept that my novel will not be everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s ok. If you don’t like my novel and want to tell others not to read it, well that’s your choice. I’ll just go find a corner and rock myself. No really, write it. I just hope you can do it in a respectful manner. There’s no need to be mean just to be cruel.

If you haven’t heard about this, ask around. See if any of your go to authors have experienced this. If you are lucky enough to create an online or real life friendship with one of your favorite authors, know that your new friendship may block future reviews without further explanation.

Have any of you experienced this? Has your review been deemed too close to the source?

Memorial Day

As you all prepare your food and roll out your grills take a moment this weekend to remember all those who cannot celebrate with their families. They have sacrificed their lives for the price of freedom. They had not meant to. Who means to fight for their country and not return home to their loved ones?

Their watch has ended.

What didn’t end is the numbing pain their families have to endure with the loss of their loved one. Fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, wives, children, and friends laid to rest in a coffin. The American flag draped over it, tears and heartache on display, throats constricted with emotion.

As I type this I can’t help the tears running down my own cheeks. The possibility of losing my husband or any of our friends and family currently serving is… horrifying.

So enjoy yourselves this weekend. Stay safe. Remember those that have helped keep us safe. If you choose to drink, do it responsibly and make a toast for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Thank you to those past and present for your service. Thank you to the many loved ones who have done their own sacrifices to support their Soldier/Airman/Sailor/Marine.
